Dr. Purushottam Mainali is the National Advisor responsible for overall management of the Agricultural Component of the project.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

KISAN was funded by the USAID, which was a part of the Presidential Feed the Future (FTF) Initiative in Nepal. The project seeked to sustainably reduce poverty and hunger in Nepal by achieving inclusive growth in the agriculture sector, increasing income of farm families and improving nutritional status, especially of women and children in over 160,000 households. The project worked in the west, mid-west, and far-west regions of the country impacting one million Nepalese. CEAPRED was involved in the implementation in and contributed to the agriculture component of the project. The Project l worked in close coordination with the GoN’s Ministry of Agricultural Development (MoAD) and Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). Moreover, KISAN was engaged with a wide-range of public, private and civil society stakeholders that included farmers, NGOs, academic and research institutions, businesses, training centers and media partners. This project was also closely aligned with the other FTF projects in Nepal: the various innovation lab (IL) programs and Cereal System initiative for South Asia (CSISA). KISAN also collaborated with the GoN’s World Bank- managed Agricultural Food Security Program(AFSP).

DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES PROVIDED

Enhanced agro-input distribution system through establishment and training of private sector input and other local service providers
Disseminated sustainable, market based proven small scale irrigation technologies
Promoted proven farming “Packages” adapted to specific ecological zones
Enhanced capacity of local organizations to sustainably plan, implement, and manage large scale agricultural development projects
Supported and trained private sector service providers and GoN extension agents as major change agents in disseminating agro inputs, scaling up appropriate technology, irrigation systems, and best management practices.
Supported scaling up of proven agricultural technologies as evidenced by research and experience
Trained farmers and processors on enhancing nutrition in cereals and other foods
