The Asian Vegetable and Mango IPM IL program was focused to implement ecologically-based, participatory IPM in Cambodia, Nepal, and Bangladesh, with a focus on pests (insect pests, pathogens, weeds) of tomato, eggplant, cabbage, cauliflower, beans, cucurbits, onion, and mango. In Nepal, the AVMIPM-IL, undertook adaptive research to tailor IPM practices and packages to locally adopted condition in two districts i.e. Banke and Surkhet. The IPM IL developed, adapted, and diffused IPM technologies through close interaction among international and host-country scientists in public and private institutions and with the Feed the Future activities. The project refined IPM Packages in major vegetables with introduction of coco-peat and plastic tray for healthy seedling production along with research studies on temporal and spatial distribution of Harmigera and Slitura. The other activity focused was to test tolerant/resistant cultivars off eggplant against EFSB (L.orbonalis). The program objectives were to;
- Undertake adaptive research in each of the countries to tailor existing and new vegetable and mango IPM practices and packages to local conditions.
- Work with public and private sector partners to diffuse IPM practices and packages to farmers.
- Improve the human and institutional capacity for developing and diffusing horticultural IPM in Nepal, Cambodia, and Bangladesh.
- Evaluate outcomes and impacts of the IPM program.
- Identify policies and regulations that affect the viability and spread of IPM in the target countries and inform officials of policy changes that would be socially, economically, and environmentally beneficial.
