NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

The major focus of "Conflict Resolution in the Community Managed Forestry Program in Kakani Village Development Committee" was to strengthen the institutional capacity of user groups/beneficiaries to identify and resolve conflicts in forest management and utilization.

Various intra and inter group conflicts relating to political, socio-economic, organizational, physical and environmental aspects were observed in the study site. The major cause of conflict was lack of participation of user groups in operation and management of community forest. Therefore, the project aimed to create an awareness/motivation among user groups in protection and development of forests. A self-governance strategy and an effective leadership skill were imparted to users to develop a sustainable mechanism for conflict resolution. An operational plan for efficient development and management of community forest was developed afterwhich the community forestry was handed over to the user group by the District Forest Office.
