With the financial support of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany, and in partnership with AWO International, CEAPRED is implementing a three-year project titled “Building Community Resilience for Food and Nutrition Security and Disaster Risk Reduction in Salyan District, Nepal” in Bangad Kupinde Municipality of Salyan District, Karnali Province.
The project aims to improve livelihoods & food security and strengthen climate change & disaster resilience among targeted communities across all 12 wards of Bangad Kupinde Municipality. It will directly reach 2,217 households (9,882 individuals), with particular attention to women and young people, as well as smallholder farmers, poor and food-insecure households, women-headed households, Dalit and Janajati communities, persons with disabilities, and households vulnerable to climate-induced disasters.
Further, the project will promote diversified and climate-resilient farming systems to increase agricultural production, productivity and household access to nutritious food. Interventions will include improved crop production, vegetable and horticultural development, livestock and other livelihood options, climate-smart agricultural practices, organic fertilizer and bio-pesticide production, water harvesting and irrigation, and improved access to agricultural inputs and markets.
To strengthen disaster preparedness and climate resilience, the project will support climate and multi-hazard risk assessments, disaster preparedness and contingency planning, early warning and weather information systems, and locally appropriate disaster risk reduction measures. It will also promote agroforestry, natural resource management and other measures that contribute to more resilient and sustainable local production systems.
The project will work through and strengthen existing farmer groups, cooperatives, Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs) and Disaster Management Committees, while fostering collaboration with Bangad Kupinde Municipality, government agencies, service providers and market actors. These local institutions will play an important role in sustaining project-supported initiatives, including community infrastructure, agricultural services, market linkages and disaster preparedness beyond the project period.
By integrating livelihood improvement, food and nutrition security, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction and inclusive community development, the project seeks to strengthen the resilience and well-being of vulnerable households in Bangad Kupinde Municipality. Lessons and good practices generated through the project will also provide opportunities for wider learning and replication in other vulnerable areas of Karnali Province.
