The agriculture sector in Nepal plays a fundamental role in the country's economy and the livelihoods of its people. Especially in remote mountainous regions, its significance amplifies for the sustenance and income of the people, although accompanied by challenges like inaccessibility, fragility, seasonality, limited economic opportunities, poor market access, and harsh biophysical conditions.  While food security in Nepal has improved in recent years, still majority of people are food-insecure.

The agricultural sector, a vital component of Nepal’s economy, can greatly benefit from renewable energy solutions, particularly in irrigation, post-harvest activities and storage. Despite of tremendous potential, the integration of renewable energy and resilience solutions within the agriculture value chain remains alarmingly low, compared to other countries. The current percentage share of renewable energy in Nepal's agriculture sector falls far below its potential.

In this backdrop, CEAPRED in partnership with ICIMOD has initiated Green Energy Management and Food Security (GEM & FS) project aiming to strengthening food system and introducing customer-oriented renewable energy solutions, tailored specifically to the agriculture value chain. Such solutions would not only improve the sector's energy efficiency but also serve as effective climate adaptation measures, mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.

Key Objectives:

  • Enhancing the adoption of a decision-support apparatus and tailor-made renewable energy solutions tailored for Nepal's agricultural landscape.
  • Intensifying food and nutrition security by advocating climate-resilient alternatives.
  • Strengthening the capacities of local and national governments, along with communities, to reinforce the climate resilience of the food system.

Key Interventions:

  • Technical assistance will be provided to 8 Municipalities in 6 districts which are selected by Climate Change Management Division of Ministry of Forest and Environment to implement Climate Change Model Village Program.
  • Climate Resilient sites will be established in designated Municipalities for development and adoption of resilient solutions for uplifting mountain economies.
  • Capacities of government and relevant stakeholders will be strengthened at Municipal, district, province and federal level on Green Energy Management.
