Integrated Pest and Pesticide Management (IPPM) Center
Commercialization of agriculture is imperative for poverty reduction in Nepal. However, commercialization also entails extensive cropping and cultivation of high value crops, which cause increased use of pesticides. Excessive pesticides use has negative impact on human and animal health as well as on the environment. This calls for promotion of appropriate technology and strategy for pest management and judicious use of pesticides. It is with that an Integrated Pest and Pesticide Management (IPPM) Center is envisaged.
Training on Integrated Pesticide and Pest Management (IPPM)
IPPM is one of the activities undertaken by CEAPRED for the sustainable development of agricultural sector in the country. The training on IPPM is directed to this endeavor.
Pests (insects, ticks, mites, nematodes, fungi, bacteria, viruses, rodents, slugs, snails, and weeds) cause considerable loss of crops (in field as well as in storage). For the control of these pests, farmers all over the world mostly use synthetic pesticides. Nepal also could not remain aloof from the use of these chemicals pesticides. The use of chemicals has been increasing rapidly specially on vegetable crops. Vegetables grown in many places contain residues of pesticides which are harmful to the consumers of these commodities. Besides this, pesticides have very negative impact on the environment and beneficial organisms. Extensive and irrational use of pesticides is unwarranted and unsustainable in the long-run.
Besides the use of pesticides there are other methods, for example, cultural methods, biological methods (including host plant resistance), physical methods and so on, for the control of various pests.
Integrated pest management involves all the above methods, wherever possible, without inducing ill effects on ecosystem and human health. IPPM promotes rational use of pesticides along with other methods for pest control and is widely accepted as a sustainable agricultural development strategy.
Target Group
All those who are involved in agricultural, environmental and rural development are the target groups for this training.
Aim
The aim of the training is to enable participants to appraise the pest status of major vegetable crops grown and of the pesticides used, and to apply IPPM principles for sustainable pest management.
Objectives
Specific objectives of the IPPM training are:
|
Content of the Training
The training is organised into theory and practical classes. Three different streams of curricula have been set for different groups of trainees.
