CEAPRED Participated in the Regional Meeting on Conservation, Use and Exchange of Crop Genetic Resources: Promoting Regional Cooperation for Food-Secure, Climate Resilient South Asia

Executive Director, Mr. Bharat Prasad Upadhyay, represented CEAPRED in this Two-Day Regional Meeting organized jointly by SAWTEE, Nepal   and Fridtjof Nansens Institute (FNI), Norway from 26-27 August, 2015 in Kathmandu. The overall objective of this consultation meeting was to bring together experts, policy makers, private sector representatives, academic researchers and relevant stakeholders in the field to discuss issues related to conservation, use and exchange of crop genetic resources in the SAARC region.

The meeting focused on two global initiatives – ITPGRFA and CBD and their implications on farmers in the region. The proceedings of the meeting reiterated that a vast majority of farmers in South Asia have been playing an important role in the conservation and sustainable use of PGRFA. Countries in the region differ in putting the appropriate legal instruments. Nepal, although a party to these global initiatives, has so far not enacted any law pertinent to these international treaties. CEAPRED has been a part of the network advocating for the promulgation of Plant Variety Protection Act in Nepal to assure farmer’s right for access and benefit sharing from their traditional genetic resources. Participants were from Nepal, Norway, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
